Running out of inodes

We've got a bunch of web servers that have very large numbers of very small files. We're running into a problem where we're routinely running out of inodes on them, even while the overall space usage is only at about 50%. Is there any way to specify a custom setting for the number of inodes on the root filesystem (or EBS attached storage) when creating it?

You can achieve this with HostInit script and configuration file /etc/mke2fs.conf (see http://linux.die.net/man/5/mke2fs.conf )
